Career

Alvarez’s interest in music began at a very tender age. She often performed during family gatherings. At 14, she started writing her music.

That being said, her father did not allow her to pursue a professional career in music. The fact did not stop her from writing and performing for her family.

Due to the Cuban Revolution, she and her husband dispatched their children to the United States. She joined them in 1965 and worked as a bank janitor.

In her 90s, Alvarez’s dream of recording her music was eventually manifested through the help of Carlos José Álvarez, her grandchild, who produced her first-ever and only album.

In 2021, her journey and life were documented in a documentary movie titled Miss Angela.

The following year, she was nominated and won the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. She made history as the oldest person who conquered the award.

In the same year, she appeared in a remake project of Father of the Bride.
