The History Behind the Railway Line and Market
The Maeklong Railway Market originated as a goods transport line from Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkram to Bangkok markets.
In 1926, the Thai government acquired the company, electrifying the eastern section into an interurban tramway.
Subsequently, during World War II in 1942, Thai military control was established. By 1955, the State Railway of Thailand fully absorbed the line, removing electrification in 1959 and introducing steam- and diesel-hauled trains.
In 1961, to alleviate traffic congestion in Bangkok, the original terminus at Pak Khlong San was replaced by Wongwian Yai.
The historic evolution created this unique market, transforming the station into a vibrant space that adapts to passing trains.
