The Weaver Ant (Oecophylla) is a large red ant known for its unique ability to weave intricate nests in trees.
Two existing species of Weaver Ants are recognized worldwide: the Asian Weaver Ant (O. smaragdina), found extensively from Pakistan to northern Australia, and the African Weaver Ant (O. longinoda), inhabiting regions in Africa.
Measuring approximately 0.3 – 0.4 inches or about 8 – 10 mm, an individual Weaver Ant weighs an average of 1 to 5 milligrams (0.000035 to 0.00018 ounces).
Weaver ants undergo a programmed egg-laying phase, progressing through the stages of egg, larva, and pupa and eventually becoming mature ants.
The entire process from egg to mature ant takes around 30 days. The transition from egg to larva takes approximately 7 days.
Larva to pupa requires 14 days, and the final stage, pupa to mature ant, takes about 9 days.
The queen produces eggs that develop into larvae and pupae. Subsequently, pupae transform into various ant types, worker ants, male ants, and queen ants.

Nest Weaving with ‘Living Bridges’
A distinctive trait of these assertive ants is their ability to construct nests from leaves.
They utilize larvae as ‘living bridges’ to bind the leaves together by biting and pulling them into place.
They prefer trees with flexible and broad leaves or small, densely packed leaves to facilitate nest construction.
When crafting the nest, the leaves are arranged to allow light to penetrate. Initially, one colony inhabits a single nest. If the nest becomes inadequate or damaged, a new nest is constructed.
A colony typically comprises several nests, each housing approximately 4,000 to 5,000 ants, depending on size.
In addition to serving as dwellings, nests are used to store food as a reserve when local food sources are scarce.

These fruit-farming allies exhibit a high level of cooperation in daily activities such as nest-building, foraging, and nest protection.
They fearlessly attack larger organisms that pose a threat. Colony members collaborate to form an effective defensive structure when faced with a threat.
Their solidarity is evident in group activities, with no ant leaving its group.
Additionally, they exhibit strong social behavior by establishing a refined communication system through scent and specific touches.
In a brief period, all group members become aware of any developments within their group, promptly dividing tasks in response.

Belonging to the Formicidae family, Weaver Ant serve as natural enemies to pests attacking plantations.
They prey on various pests, including green beetles, leaf-eating caterpillars, fruit-eating caterpillars, and aphids on cocoa, cashews, and oranges.
Being territorial, Weaver Ant attacks anyone disrupting nest construction, regardless of the intruder’s size.
Their territorial nature has led many farmers to utilize them as protectors of fruit trees against potential threats.
Historical records show that the Chinese were the first to discover and employ these natural guardians for their orange orchards over 1,000 years ago.
