Chand Baori is the deepest well in the world which has a unique shape. This well is surrounded by thousands of steps.

Chand Baori is thought to have been built over 1,000 years ago. This well is also known as the well of the moon.
The well is located in Abhaneri Village, about 95 km from Jaipur City, Rajasthan. This well is an important source of water for the local community.

Have 3,500 Stairs
Chand Baori is a stepwell that has a square structure with a width of 35 meters on each side. There is a large pavilion on one side.
On all three sides of the walls of the well, there are about 3,500 steps. In addition, there are 13 floors of steps with a depth of 30 meters.
The arrangement of the steps on the well wall is not symmetrical. The ladder is arranged in a zigzag manner, which illustrates the accuracy of mathematical calculations based on the shape of the well wall.

The architecture of the well at Chand Baori is quite amazing, unlike most wells. In addition to thousands of steps, this well also has a complex of other buildings.
The side of the pavilion at Chan Baori has a beautifully carved balcony. There are pillars made specifically for the royal family.
On the walls of the buildings in this complex, there are carvings of figures and gods. In addition, several statues were found.
Several centuries after it was built, the Mughal Empire renovated this place. Built a wall not far from the position of the well.
Also built buildings like palaces. The shape is a curved structure.
In this place found the resting place of the King and Queen along with a stage used for performing arts.
The construction of the walls made the well closed off, just like part of the palace and galleries. Meanwhile, the terrace is made into a garden with beautiful irrigation.
The wall with the pillared corridor is currently used as a place to store the sculptures found around the location of the well.

Chand Baori was Built to honor the Goddess of Joy
According to history, Chand Baori was built by Raja Chand of the Nikumbh Dynasty. Ruler of the Rajput kingdom around the 8th to 9th century AD.
The construction of this well is dedicated to the Goddess of Joy, Harshad Mata. Hence, outside the well complex, there is a Harshad Mata temple.
The well is believed to be a holy place before entering the temple. Therefore, the Goddess of Joy is considered a bringer of happiness that spreads light throughout the village.
This place was built to honor the gods. Moreover, it has also benefited communities by supplying water.
Well with steps in India first appeared in the 3rd century and were built because of the uncertain climate at that time. Many parts of India are dry all year round, then at certain times of the day, it will rain heavily for weeks on end.
To overcome this, a well was built that can hold water up to a depth of ten floors underground. That way, water will be stored during the rains and can be used as a source of water during a drought.
Currently, the water in this well is no longer used as a source of water, but this place is still frequently visited. This well was abandoned after the community got to know the new water system.
