Quotes

“I love working with Darren. Darren is hilarious. He creates a very easy atmosphere on set, which is cool, considering how demanding the shoot was.”

“I’m not rich or anything. A lot of people after I made Starry Eyes thought that I was a millionaire [laughs]. It’s sweetly naive but it’s also funny because I’m thinking, I made like two grand on Starry Eyes. Then I lost my job in the process. So it’s interesting.”

“I don’t feel different really at all. I’ve been recognized a couple of times, which is fun. It’s weird when a stranger is like, “Oh! Alex Essoe!” And you’re like, “What?! How do you know my name, man?! Then you’re like, “Oh, right. You saw the thing I did.” That’s a little strange.”

“The Shining is one of my favorite movies.”

“Working on Doctor Sleep was kind of a turning point for me personally. I felt like I was waking up from a dream, if that makes any sense, while I was working on this. It was such an amazing experience. I made lifelong friends on that movie.”

“Part of the challenge was owning up to what I and the character had in common, and exposing the darker parts of myself that I don’t really share with people—because that’s a lot of what acting is. So there was a difficulty to it, but there was also catharsis, and I was excited to have what I do for a living represented in such an unglorified way.”

“I have encountered dismissive people—directors or casting directors or whoever—in the audition room, who sort of remind you that you’re at the bottom of the food chain. But I’ve never been asked to disrobe at an audition, and I’ve never had a strobe light in my face.”

“There are a lot of people who feel that the way to be truly competitive is to eliminate the competition, or break them down, instead of focusing on their own work and ambitions—the things they really care about.”

“I don’t want to be in a horror movie if I’m just going to be a coed who gets stabbed; that’s not why I do this. I feel extremely fortunate, because normally you don’t get a part that is so involved and weird and multidimensional like Sarah, so I felt I was being handed a pot of gold.”

“At least in acting, there’s more involved than just being pretty. You actually have to know how to do something; in modeling it literally is, “Do you have the look we want? No? Goodbye.””

Alex Essoe has been facing various experiences and ups and downs throughout her career. Even so, she decides to keep going.
