“I worked out six hours a day, six days a week, to get 16 pounds of extra muscle.”

“I speak Dutch, German, French, and English and have acted in all of those languages, but I love the American experience.”

“It’s interesting what happens when you take on a role, I think. What happens to me – without sounding too spiritual or too hippy, I guess – what happens, most of the time, you do a lot of research, and you get into the character, and at a certain moment, it’s like the character takes over.”

“At 14, I was modeling, which helped me come out of my shell, but I always dreamed of theater school.”

“I don’t love to generalize, because I think every person has bad and good in them.”

“I’m from a little village in the south of Holland where there was nothing to do but watch American movies and television – I grew up with The ‘A-Team,’ ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ and ‘Edward Scissorhands.'”

“I love pretending more than reality.”

“I love long dinners with friends.”

“I’m not really into trends.”

“I’m not an actor that works in front of a mirror, who tries to repeat her actions or whatever.”

“It sometimes happens that you come out of a scene, and you don’t even know what happened. It’s like you’re in the zone.”

“Being in the camera’s eye is like stepping into a dream world, one that is often more interesting than real life.”

“Where I grew up, there was one supermarket, one school, one hairdresser, and that was it. It was a very small community.”

“I love Tilda Swinton and the way she dresses. She always looks like a piece of art.”

“Denis Villeneuve is such a wonderful filmmaker. I just feel nothing but grateful to have worked with him and to have a chance to learn his language of filming.”

“I want to play so many different characters. I want to, like, understand so many different people, and psychoanalysis, everything. I love that about my job: getting into the character and understanding it and doing the psychoanalysis and creating that character.”

“Being in the camera’s eye is like stepping into a dream world, one that is often more interesting than real life.”

“You have to work your way up – that’s how I was brought up and what I believe in: working hard.”

“I didn’t ‘leave’ Dutch cinema.”

“As a female actress, I didn’t feel the need to be sexy or beautiful.”
